0335 GERMANY (Bavaria) - The highest mountain in Germany
The Zugspitze, with 2,962m high, is the highest peak of the Wetterstein Mountains, as well as the highest mountain in Germany. Because of its location (now to the border between Germany and Austria), it was mentioned by name since 1590, in a description of the border between the County of Werdenfels and Austria. The first recorded ascent to the summit was accomplished by a team of land surveyors in 1820, but certainly was escalated by locals long time before.
On the peak's flanks are three glaciers, the Northern Schneeferner and the Höllentalferner (the two largest in Germany) and the Southern Schneeferner. Also three cable cars run to the top of the Zugspitze: the Tyrolean Zugspitze Cable Car, built in 1926 but prolonged to the current terminus point in 1991 (in image), the Eibsee Cable Car, and one linking the end of the Bavarian Zugspitze Railway (about which I wrote here) with the top of the mountain.
In the winter of 1931/32, a post office was set up on the Zugspitze by the German Imperial Post Office (Reichspost). It still exists today in the Sonnalpin restaurant, is, of course, the Germany’s highest post office, and has the postal address: 82475 Zugspitze. In fact, you can see the postmark of this post office right on my postcard, because Cătălin made me the joy to send it from there, gesture for which I can't thank him enough.
The stamp is part of the Blumen series, about which I wrote here.
