0693 CROATIA (Primorje-Gorski Kotar) - Lubenice (UNESCO WHS - Tentative List)

Located in Kvarner Gulf of Adriatic Sea, Cres island has been inhabited since the Paleolithic time and was later ruled by the Greeks, the Roman Empire, and the Byzantine Empire. In the 7th century the island was invaded by the Croats, who lost it in favor of Republic of Venice in the 10th century. The island went through a change of rulers for centuries, being ruled by Croats, Hungarians, Venetians, Austrian Empire, and even Italians, between the end of WWI and 1947, when was assigned to Yugoslavia.

The island has many settlements, one of them being the small Lubenice, founded 400 years ago on top of a 380m high ridge that overlooks the Adriatic Sea. It comprises now only 24 permanent inhabitants and 40 buildings, constructed out of the same material as the surrounding cliffs, but was continuously inhabited throughout the ancient times and Middle Ages. Of special value are the remains of the medieval fortifications and two city gates, as well as the preserved historic core. Two longitudinal streets transversely connected with small, covered arched passages stand out. The other urban elements include the city loggia situated along the bell tower of the parish church, a square with a communal cistern, parish church, cemetery and a number of medieval chapels. Lubenice was included in the Tentative List of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 2005.

About the stamps

The first stamp is part of the series of two (with the face values of 1,60 HRK - on this postcard, and 3,10 HRK) dedicated to the Museum of the Krapina Neanderthal Man, designed by Željko Kovačić, and issued on November 7, 2012.

The second stamp, designed by Dubravka Zglavnik - Horvat, was issued on November 5, 2012 to celebrate the International Day of the Romani language. This day was for the first time celebrated in 2009 in Zagreb, where since then take place every year various cultural manifestations, as well the International Symposium on Romani language with the participation of Romani language researchers, linguists, writers and journalists from about twenty countries.
