0757 CHINA (Sichuan) - Two men from the Sichuan province
This postcard captures an image from an ancient town in the Sichuan province, located in the southwest of the country, between Himalayas, Qinling Range and mountainous areas of Yunnan, and crossed by Yangtze River. Historically known as the "Province of Abundance", because is one of the major agricultural production bases of China, it was also the base for numerous amphibious military forces and served as the ideal hiding frontier for political refugees.
Sichuan had been China's most populous province from 1955 until 1997 (100 million inhabitants in 1982), when the city of Chongqing and the surrounding counties were split off into the new Chongqing Municipality. The majority of the province's population is Han Chinese, but it has significant minorities of Tibetans, Yi, Qiang and Naxi in the western portion, which forms a traditional transition zone between Central Asian and East Asian cultures.
Because the men in the postcard wear moderne clothes, I can't tell if they are Han Chinese, or are part of a minority. Anyway, they seem to wait some customers, but they aren't traders in the true sense of the word, but sell their own products, I wouldn't say which ones. They have very expressive faces, that say much about their lives, at all easy.
