1057 UNITED STATES (Wyoming) - Wyoming map
Placed between Montana, South Dakota, Nebraska, Colorado, Utah, and Idaho, Wyoming is one of the three states (along with Colorado and Utah) which have borders along straight latitudinal and longitudinal lines. The western two thirds of the state is covered mostly with the mountain ranges and rangelands in the foothills of the Eastern Rocky Mountains, while the eastern third of the state is high elevation prairie known as the High Plains. Following, is the second least densely populated of the 50 United States, after Alaska. Its capital and its most populous city is Cheyenne founded in 1867 by General Grenville M. Dodge and named after the American Indian Cheyenne nation, one of the most famous and prominent Great Plains tribes.
More than 48% of the land in Wyoming is owned by the U.S. Government, being formed from National Forests, a National Grassland, National Parks, National Monuments, other conservation and historical properties, and a number of vast swathes of public land, in addition to the F.E. Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne. The most part of the famous Yellowstone National Park (considered the first national park in the world) is located in this state, as also Grand Teton National Park, Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area, Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area, Devils Tower National Monument, and Fossil Butte National Monument. Wyoming's climate is generally semi-arid and continental, and is drier and windier in comparison to most of the United States with greater temperature extremes.
Several Native American groups (including the Crow, Arapaho, Lakota, and Shoshone) inhabited the region when white explorers first entered there. What is now southwestern Wyoming became a part of the Spanish Empire and later Mexican territory of Alta California, until it was ceded to the United States in 1848, at the end of the Mexican-American War, acquiring the name Wyoming in 1865. It was the first territory and then U.S. state which grant suffrage to women, and also a pioneer in welcoming women into politics. Due to its civil-rights history, Wyoming's state nickname is "The Equality State", and the official state motto is "Equal Rights". The U.S. admitted Wyoming into the Union as the 44th state on July 10, 1890. In the central western portion of the state is located Wind River Indian Reservation, an Indian reservation established in 1868 and now shared by the Eastern Shoshone and Northern Arapaho tribes of Native Americans.
About the stamps
The first stamp was issued January 16, 2013 for celebrate the beginning of the Year of the Snake (February 10, 2013 - January 30, 2014. Combining original artwork by Kam Mak with two elements from the previous series of Lunar New Year stamps - Clarence Lee's intricate paper-cut design of a snake and the Chinese character for “Snake,” drawn in grass-style calligraphy by Lau Bun - art director Ethel Kessler has created a culturally rich stamp design that celebrates the diversity of the American experience.
The second stamp, depicting Spicebush Swallowtail, is part of a definitive series with butterflies, about which I wrote here.
