1471 SPAIN (Canary Islands) - Playa de las Américas in Tenerife

Playa de las Américas is a purpose-built holiday resort in the southern and southern-west part of the Municipality of Arona, in the west of Tenerife, one of the Canary Islands. It was built in the 1960s beside the town of Los Cristianos and stretching west to the Costa Adeje. The resort area features bars, nightclubs, restaurants, attractions, and beaches, most of which are man-made with imported sand from Africa due to the darkness of the native volcanic sand. It is a centre of nightlife in Tenerife, and can be considered the party capital of the island. In other words, if you are looking for peace and quiet, then perhaps Playa de las Américas may not be for you.

About the stamp

The stamp put me in trouble. The postcard was sent obviously from Tenerife (even if the postmark is missing), but then why is on it this stamp of Swiss Post, without face value? Probably that the philatelists know what it is about, but I'm not philatelist, so I had to search, and finally I don't really elucidated the enigma. I found that P.P. means Privat Postal, SPI is the abbreviation of Swiss Post Identifier, and MAD is probably for Madrid. The Zurich-Mülligen Letter Centre is the largest in Switzerland (with an area of 70,000 square metres on two floors), and the only Swiss Post letter centre that handles international letter mail. OK, but how do I link this information together?  I suppose this postcard arrived from Tenerife to Zurich-Mülligen Letter Centre (maybe via Madrid?), but why was put this stamp there? The postcard had no stamp? I would appreciate if someone who knows how the system works would help me to explain this "enigma".

  1. I had a similar stamp on my Menorca card. And was also puzzeled by it. At first glance I thought it was sent from Switzerland. But what looks like a Swiss stamp is ..well a Swiss stamp.

This is how it works: In many souvenir shops, kiosks, hotels and camping sites you can buy ”Swiss Post stickers” that can be used to mail postcards from Spain to anywhere abroad. Postcards bearing ”Swiss Post stickers” must be placed in a ”Swiss Post mailbox”, which you can find at the sales points. The ”Swiss Post mailboxes” are yellow and bear a ”Swiss Post” logo accompanied by a red-rimmed cross. Swiss Post will then collect and dispatch your postcards.
