1713 UNITED KINGDOM (Turks and Caicos Islands) - Market woman
This photo belongs to Michael Friedel. Born in 1935, is known as one of Germany’s best photo-journalists. A freelance photographer and author of over 20 illustrated books, he lives near Munich and since 1961 has published countless photo features in German magazines including Stern and GEO, and in many international publications. Friedel’s particular interest in the ‘dream islands of eternal summer’ has made him an expert on the subject and he has documented the many facets of island life in unique pictures taken above and under water, on land and from the air.
I went to a photo library of Michael Friedel to find details about the photography. Not little was my surprise when I read on the website the following: "Market woman in Cap Haitien. The broad-brimmed straw hat gives shelter from the hot midday sun. The markets are ruled by woman.Haiti is one of the poorest developing countries in the western hemisphere. Every means of distribution of goods can be found here. For tourists this is something to photograph, but for development aid planners it is a nightmare. The big markets last all day. Specialised trades have developed: the woman who sells drinking-water by the mouthful, the stew-cooks who light their fires on the spot, and the Òboys' of all ages who carry people's shopping-bags for a small fee."
So what is the truth? This photography was made in Haiti, as it says on the website, or in Turks and Caicos Islands, as the editor wrote on the postcard?
About the stamps
The stamp is part of a series of eight issued on 2012 to commemorate 100 years since the sinking of Titanic, about which I wrote here.
