Mumbai, the most populous city in India, and the ninth most populous agglomeration in the world, with an estimated population of 18.4 million, lies on the west coast of India, at the mouth of the Ulhas River, on Salsette Island (originally seven islands which merged in the 18th century). It was named an alpha world city, and it is the wealthiest city in India, having the highest GDP of any city in South, West, or Central Asia. Its architecture is a blend of Gothic Revival, Indo-Saracenic, Art Deco, and other contemporary styles. Most of the buildings during the British period were built in Gothic Revival style.
In the newer suburbs, modern buildings dominate the landscape. Mumbai has by far the largest number of skyscrapers in India, with 956 existing buildings and 272 under construction as of 2009. It is the city with the 12th highest number of skyscrapers in the world. Mumbai is undergoing a massive construction boom, with more than 15 Supertalls, hundreds of skyscrapers and thousands of high-rises under construction. The original residential skyscrapers in Mumbai were constructed in the 1970s, when Usha Kiran and Matru Mandir were developed and stood at about 250 feet, or 25 floors each.
