1834 CHILE (Antofagasta) - Paso de Jama in Altiplano
The Altiplano (the high plain), located in west-central South America, where the Andes are at their widest, is the most extensive area of high plateau on Earth outside of Tibet. Its bulk lies within Bolivian and Peruvian territory while its southern parts lie in Chile and Argentina. Dominated by massive active volcanoes of the Central Volcanic Zone to the west, and the Cordillera Real in the north east, it has a height averages about 3,750m. The part which belongs to Chile and Argentina, arid and bleak, is known as the Puna de Atacama. The Central Andean dry puna, part of the Puna grassland, has a cold desert climate, its flora being dominated by species of the genera Stipa and Festuca.
The Paso de Jama is a mountain pass through the Andes between Chile and Argentina, at an elevation of 4,200m at the border. It links the city of Jujuy in Argentina with San Pedro de Atacama in Chile. The road was opened on 6 December 1991, and is paved throughout since the year of 2005. It is open throughout the year, although occasionally closed by snow. It is used by truck traffic between northern Argentina and Paraguay and the ports of northern Chile. Actually it constitutes a strategic sector of the bi-oceanic corridor linking ports on the Atlantic with the Pacific.
About the stamps
Two of the stamps are part of a series about Rapa Nui (Easter Island) Takona Body Painting, about which I wrote here.
The other three are part of the series History of Airplanes, designed by Mauricio Navarro and issued on August 9, 2013.
The last is one of the two issued on August 29, 2001, under the name Antarctica.
