1951 A general view of Vizille

Located at 18km de Grenoble, in the valley of the Romanche River, Vizille is a town with a past rich in historical events, proven by the presence of the grandest castle in the Dauphiné, which since 1984 houses the Musée de la Révolution Française de Vizille. Moreover, is considered  the birthplace of the French Revolution, because here took place on 7 June 1788 the meeting which led to the formation of the Assembly of Vizille.

2819 Vizille Castle

The former castle was held during the French Wars of Religion by the Catholics. In 1593 it was bought by the leader of the Protestant Army, François de Bonne, duc de Lesdiguières, the last Connétable de France. From 1604 till 1619 the Duke rebuilt the castle in the form it retains today to highlight his important role in the French court. At the end of the 18th century, the castle was bought by Claude Perier, who set up a textile factory in it.

The Perier family owned it until 1895, during which time the castle itself was made a monument historique in 1862. In 1924 the castle became the property of the French State, which ceded it to the Community Council of Isere in 1973. A hundred hectares of greens, sheets of water and canals, and a hunting park of woodland pierced by rides and avenues surround the château, enclosed by a wall seven kilometres in circumference. The park was classified as a historic monument on 23 August 1991. The design of the park dates from the 19th century.

About the stamps

On the postcard is a stamp which belong to the definitive series Marianne de la jeunesse, about which I wrote here. Another stamp, depicting Campanilla (Ipomoea purpurea), is part of a series of flowers issued on September 25, 1982, in Argentina. The third stamp shows José Joaquín Prieto, the President of Chile between 1831 and 1841, and was issued in 1954 in Chile.
