2217 UNITED KINGDOM (Bermuda) - Gibbs Hill Lighthouse
Built in 1844 by the Corps of Royal Engineers, and automated in 1964, the Gibbs Hill Lighthouse is the taller (36m) of two lighthouses on Bermuda, and one of the first lighthouses in the world to be made of cast-iron. This is because at that time, steel still was not able to be bent. Its white tower has a conical frustum shape. The optic consists of a Fresnel lens from 1904 revolving on steel bearings. While it is certainly not extremely tall in lighthouse standards, the hill that it stands on is one of the highest on the island. Airplanes can see its flashes from over 160km away.
About the stamps
The first stamp, depicting William Perot, is part of the series The 200th Anniversary of Bermuda Postal Service, about which I wrote here. The second stamp, depicting Astwood Park Beach, is part of the series Bermuda's beaches, part 2,about which I wrote here.
