2219 ZIMBABWE - Images of the country
Located in southern Africa, between South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, and Mozambique, Zimbabwe is a landlocked country consisting mainly of a central plateau with altitudes between 1,000 and 1,600 m. Only about 20% of the country consists of low-lying areas. Victoria Falls, one of the world's biggest and most spectacular waterfalls (recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO - about which I wrote here), is located in the country's extreme northwest and is part of the Zambezi River.
Lake Kariba is the world's largest man-made lake by volume. It lies 1300km upstream from the Indian Ocean, along the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. It was filled between 1958 and 1963 following the completion of the Kariba Dam, flooding the Kariba Gorge on the Zambezi River. The wildlife is mostly located in remote or rugged terrain in the national parks and private wildlife ranches. The elephant (about which I wrote here) is one of the the prominent wild fauna members and one of the "big five".
Great Zimbabwe is a ruined city in the southeastern hills of Zimbabwe, near Lake Mutirikwe, and was the capital of the Kingdom of Zimbabwe during the Late Iron Age. Construction on the monument by ancestors of the Shona people began in the 11th century and continued until the 15th century. Great Zimbabwe served as a royal palace for the Zimbabwean monarch and would have been used as the seat of political power. It is recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, under the name Great Zimbabwe National Monument.
