Established in 1893, Hurtigruten (Express Route) is a daily passenger and freight shipping service along Norway's western and northern coast between Bergen and Kirkenes. Hurtigruten ships sail almost the entire length of the country, completing the round-trip journey in 11 days. The trip has been described as the "World's Most Beautiful Sea Voyage," with highlights including the Hanseatic League city of Bergen, the Geiranger fjord, and the Lofoten Islands. Beginning in the 1980s, the operators put more emphasis on tourism.
De syv søstre (The Seven Sisters) is a mountain range on the island of Alsten, consisting, of course, of seven peaks: Botnkrona (1,072,m), Grytfoten (1,019 m), Skjæringen (1,037m), Tvillingene (the twins) (945m and 980m), Kvasstinden (1,010m), and Breitinden (910m). The range is popular with hikers and offers scenic views over the surrounding area. On clear days visitors can truly understand why the surroundings are called "The kingdom of the thousand isles" by the local populace. A good view of the mountain range can be achieved traveling by sea in the Hurtigruten.
About the stamps
The stamp, issued special for Hurtigruten, depicts MS Finnmarken, and the postmark is also the one of the post office located on board. MS Finnmarken was built in 2002 and is the third Hurtigruten ship with this name.
