2424 FRANCE (Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur) - The circuit of Gorges de Daluis and Gorges du Cians

The Gorges de Daluis is a 6km-long canyon in the southeastern France, cut in red sandstone by the river Var, which starts off at the commune of Guillaumes and ends at the small commune of Daluis, where the river widens. This gorge are huge walls (in some places 300m tall), similar to those of the river Cians, but more flared. The tourists can follow the old smugglers' trail, or in the beauty of these landscapes, the marked trails, from village to village.

The river Cians has its source, in Mercantour National Park, at the foot of Mount Mounier (2817m). A small alpine torrent sometimes dry, sometimes impetuous when the snow melts, it runs through a canyon of red shale, named Gorges du Cians, and flows into the Var after 23km of an acrobatic course. Gorge du Cian is to the East of Gorge de Daluis and a circuit linking both gorges makes an excellent day out, passing through tunnels, past ravines and waterfalls cut into the red rock.

About the stamps

The first stamp, designed by Louis Briat, was issued on February 23, 1995 to mark 100 years since the death of Louis Pasteur. Louis Pasteur (1822-1895) was a French chemist and microbiologist renowned for his discoveries of the principles of vaccination, microbial fermentation and pasteurization.

Bernard Le Bovier de Fontenelle (1657-1757) was a French author and an influential member of three of the academies of the Institut de France, noted especially for his accessible treatment of scientific topics during the unfolding of the Age of Enlightenment.

The third stamp, Remembering slavery and its abolition, designed by Nicolas Vial, was issued on May 11, 2006.
