2503 INDIA (Karnataka) - A letter box in Dharwad

Department of Posts, trading as India Post, is a government-operated postal system in India. Generally referred to within India as "the post office", it is the most widely distributed postal system in the world. Mail is collected from 579,595 letter boxes by 154,979 post offices, of which almost 90% are in rural areas. On average, a post office serves an area of 21.23 square kilometres and a population of 7,114.

The world's first official airmail flight took place in India on 18 February 1911, a journey of 18km lasting 27 minutes. Henri Pequet, a French pilot, carried about 15kg of mail (approximately 6,000 letters and cards) across the Ganges from Allahabad to Naini; included in the airmail was a letter to King George V of the United Kingdom. The highest post office in the world is in Hikkim, Himachal Pradesh operated by India post at a height of 4,700m.

The country is divided into 22 postal circles, each circle is divided into regions, which comprising field units known as divisions, further divided into subdivisions. The mail is processed by a network of 389 mail offices and conveyed by road, rail and airlines all over the country and the world. Letter boxes in India are principally of two types, viz., Pillar box and the TV style box. Pictured is a TV style box at the gate of PMG office, Dharwad.

About the stamps
The first stamp is one of the two of the India-France joint issue, released on April 10, 2015 to mark 50 Years of Space Cooperation India-France. The stamps are related to the Saral and Megha-Tropiques space programs.

The second stamp was issued on June 21, 2015 to celebrate the International Yoga Day. June 21 (the Summer Solstice) was declared as the International Day of Yoga by the United Nations General Assembly on December 11, 2014. Yoga is a physical, mental and spiritual practice or discipline that originated in India.

The last stamp is part of the series Builders of Modern India, about which I wrote here.
