2574 ROMANIA (Mureş) - Sovata

Located in the Székely Land, in the historical Transylvania province, between the Corund River and the valley of the Târnava Mică River, Sovata is a resort for all seasons, recognized at European level even since 1850. The first data about Sovata are from 1578, by 1583 it was already a village, and it gained the status of town in 1952. Due to its salty lakes and warm water it became an increasingly popular health resort during the end of the 19th and the 20th century.

There are five salty lakes, of which the most recent is Lacul Ursu (The Bear Lake), formed between 1875 and 1880, following some complex geological events, weather and hydrological. Two creeks (Auriu and Criş-Topliţa) have dissolved the salt massif gradually, until the land was crumbled, and in a period of around five years they filled the gap, giving birth to the current lake. With a shape like a bear skins stretched, the local people given it the name Bear Lake.

The lakes in Sovata are famous for both therapeutic effect and for the heliothermy phenomenon. Above the salt water there is a layer of fresh water from precipitation, which is not mixed with the salt water, but is maintained at the surface, acting as a thermal insulator. Thus, the lake water temperature varies depending on the solar heat build-up in salt water. According to the official website of the resort, temperature in the Bear Lake (in summertime) is 10-20°C at the surface, 30-40°C at a depth of 1m, and 40-60°C at a depth of 1.5m.
