2685 UNITED STATES (New York) - Javits Center in New York City
Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, shortened to Javits Center in popular usage, is a large convention center located on Eleventh Avenue, between 34th and 40th streets, in Hell's Kitchen, Manhattan. It was designed by architect James Ingo Freed of Pei Cobb Freed & Partners. The controversial and revolutionary space frame structure was begun in 1980, finished in 1986, and named for United States Senator Jacob K. Javits, who died that year.
Operated by the New York Convention Center Operation Corporation, a public benefit corporation, the Javits Center helps drive the economies of New York State and New York City, generating an impressive $1.5 billion in economic activity and supporting 14,000 jobs. With 840,000 square feet of flexible exhibition space occupying six city blocks along the scenic Hudson River, the facility can accommodate any size event, at any time. It’s no wonder that 35,000 companies choose it as their preferred venue every year.
Between May 28 and June 4, 2016 on Javis Center took place the World Stamp Show-NY 2016, the United States' once-a-decade international celebration of stamp collecting. This was the first international stamp show to be held in New York since FIPEX in 1956. The show brought together stamp collectors, dealers, exhibitors, postal administrations and societies from around the world together to sell, buy and discuss all aspects of the hobby known as philately.
Around 3,800 competitive exhibit frames displayed stamp presentations in numerous categories created by collectors from over 70 countries. Several famous and rare stamps were shown in the Court of Honor, including the world's most expensive, the unique 1856 British Guiana 1c magenta, which was sold by Sotheby's to an anonymous buyer (later identified as shoe designer and businessman Stuart Weitzman on June 17, 2014 for a record $9.48 million.
About the stamps
The stamps on the postcard and also on the envelope were issued to celebrate World Stamp Show-NY 2016, which took place at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York from May 28 to June 4, 2016. All four stamps were designed by Michael Dyer. The first two (issued on August 20, 2015) share an identical vertical design that positions a single star within a circle at the center, surrounded by intricate geometric patterns resembling engine turning, but were printed in different colors, red and blue. Additional patterns, lines and ornaments fill the remaining vignette, with "USA" lettered inside a tablet across the top of the stamp, and "FOREVER" within a second tablet at the bottom.
The last two were issued on May 28, 2016. The design for the new stamp set repeats the design of the stamps issued in 2015, but turns the colors inside out by using red (or blue) printing for the areas that appeared white on the 2015 stamp, and letting those inked lines on the earlier stamps appear uninked on the new issue.
