2799 SWEDEN (Stockholm) - Self-portrait by Rembrandt

The famous Dutch painter Rembrandt (1606-1669) created nearly one hundred self-portraits during his lifetime including approximately fifty paintings, thirty-two etchings and seven drawings. The one shown in the postcard is a small oil painting (15 x 12.2 cm), realised in 1630. Characterized by very fine brush strokes, it shows a focused, serious artist, with a slightly quizzical look. There are known only five paintings by Rembrandt, which were applied to copper, three of them with primed gold leaf as this self-portrait.

This painting was owned by Elias van der Hoeven from Rotterdam, until it was acquired in 1768 on an urban auction by Johan van der Marck Aegidiusz. It passed through several hands until it reached in a private collection in Vienna, where it was founded in 1956 in connection with the exhibition Rembrandt donated to the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm. On 20 December 2000 it was stolen following an armed robbery, together with other two paintings by Renoir, being recovered in 2005 during an attempted trade in Copenhagen.

About the stamp
The stamp is one of the six of the series Food in Sweden, about which I wrote here.
