3111 MALAYSIA (Johor) - Sultan Abu Bakar State Mosque in Johor Bahru
Erected between 1892 and 1900 in Johor Bahru, the capital of the state of Johor, Sultan Abu Bakar State Mosque sits on top of a prominent hill, overlooking the Straits of Johor. The architect Tuan Haji Mohamed Arif bin Punak intentionally based much of its appearance on colonial English Victorian architecture as noted by the minarets that take the form of British 19th century clocktowers. The architecture additionally includes some Moorish architecture elements, along with some minor Malay influence.
This Anglophile influence can further be seen in the British architectural influences not only on the Sultan Abu Bakar State Mosque but also in several others government and palace buildings in Johor constructed during the same period. The mosque is named for Sultan Abu Bakar (considered the "Father of Modern Johor"), the father of Sultan Ibrahim who ordered its construction. The mosque can accommodate 2,000 worshippers at any one time.
About the stamps
The first stamp is one of the three stamps issued on March 8, 2003, and dedicated to Sharafuddin Idris Shah (born 11 December 1945), the ninth and current Sultan of the Malaysian state of Selangor. He ascended the throne on 22 November 2001, succeeding his father, Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah.
The last stamp is one of three stamps issued on April 26, 2007 to celebrates the Installation of His Majesty Yang DiPertuan Agong XIII. The Yang di-Pertuan Agong (literally "He Who Was Made Lord") is the monarch and head of state of Malaysia. The office was established in 1957 when the Federation of Malaya (now Malaysia) gained independence from the United Kingdom. The Yang di-Pertuan Agong is formally elected to a five-year term by and from among the nine rulers of the Malay states (nine of the thirteen states of Malaysia that have hereditary royal rulers). After a ruler had served as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, he may not stand for election until all rulers of the other states have also stood for election. The 13th Yang di-Pertuan Agong was, between 2006 and 2011, Mizan Zainal Abidin of Terengganu, the 17th and current Sultan of Terengganu.
