3121 ROMANIA (Prahova / Braşov / Dâmboviţa) - Bucegi Mountains

3121 Panoramic view of Bucegi Mountains
in the village of Poiana Mărului, Braşov County

The Bucegi Mountains are located at the eastern extremity of the Southern Carpathians, extending between the Prahova Valley to the east and the Rucăr-Bran Corridor and the Ialomiţa Valley to the west, and are delimited to the North by the Bârsa Depression and to the South by the Sub Carpathians of Curvature. Being of a great structural and morphological complexity, the massif appears as a natural fortress, with an enclosure suspended from 1600-2500 m, supported by strong abrupts. The highest point of the massif is the Omu Peak (2514m).

To the east, the Bucegi Mountains have a very steep slope towards the popular tourist destination Prahova Valley, with the most ski resorts in Romania. Among the most popular ski resorts within the Bucegi Mountains are Sinaia and Buşteni. The main tourist attractions in Sinaia (nicknamed the "Pearl of the Carpathians") are Peleş Castle, Pelişor, Royal Station, Sinaia Monastery, Casino and George Enescu Memorial House. Buşteni is the starting point of trekking on some of the most attractive routes in Bucegi Massif, but is also a cultural point, featuring Cantacuzino Castle and Cezar Petrescu Memorial Museum.

At a higher elevation is the Bucegi Plateau, where wind and rain have turned the rocks into spectacular figures such as the Sphinx and Babele. Other tourist attractions are Heroes' Cross on Caraiman Peak, Urlătoarea Waterfall, and Ialomiţa Cave. Bucegi Mountains area has been proposed for protection in 1936, due to peerless landscapes and great diversity of plant and animal species, but Bucegi Natural Park was established only in 1974, being declared a protected area in 2000.
