The North Point Light is a lighthouse located in Lake Park on the East Side of Milwaukee. It replaced a previous Cream City brick lighthouse constructed in 1855 that was located too close to the edge of the eroding bluff. In 1888 a cast-iron lighthouse was built, but this tower was not tall enough and was placed on top of a steel structure in 1912 raising its height to 23m and light focal plane to 47m. The present light source is a 25,000 candlepower lamp rotated electrically, visible for 40km, and controlled by an automatic time clock.
About the stamps
The first stamp, depicting Common Buckeye Butterfly, was issued on March 8, 2006.
The second stamp is part of the series Paws, Claws, Hooves, Scales, Fins and Feathers!, about which I wrote here. The third stamp is part of the series Jack-O'-Lanterns, about which I wrote here.
The old stamp is part of the series of definitive stamps known as Presidential Series, issued in 1938. The issue provided a chronological overview of the American presidency, from George Washington on the 1-cent stamp to Calvin Coolidge on the 5-dollar value (all 29 presidents who had died before 1938, including many who had never before appeared on a postage stamp, in the order of their terms in office). In addition appeared Benjamin Franklin (0.5 cent), Martha Washington (1.5 cent); the White House (4.5 cent). The design of the series was realised by the artist Elaine Rawlinson. She based her design for the 1-cent stamp on a bust of George Washington’s profile by the sculptor Jean Antoine Houdin (1741-1828). The stamps were in use from 1938 into the mid-1950s.
