2196 UNITED STATES (North Carolina) - Holden Beach
Located in southern Brunswick County, Holden Beach is a seaside town with 575 inhabitants, which occupies an 13-km-long barrier island on the Atlantic Ocean, bounded by Shallotte Inlet to the west, Lockwoods Folly Inlet to the east, and the Intracoastal Waterway to the north. Before the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dredged the Intracoastal Waterway in the 1930s, the only body of water separating Holden Beach from the mainland was the Elizabeth River.
The temperate climate, the natural beauty of the area with its south facing beaches, the spectacular sunrises and sunsets and the abundance of recreational opportunities draw these vacationers and permanent residents to the area. A remarkable bridge that connects the mainland to Holden Beach rises 65 feet above the Intracoastal Waterway, providing a stunning view of the ocean and a sweeping entry to the island. It was opened for traffic in 1986, and replaced a turn-table bridge, which no longer coped with traffic.
About the stamps
Two of the stamps, depicting Baltimore oriole (Icterus galbula), is part of the series Songbirds, about which I wrote here. The second stamp is part of the series Apples, about which I wrote here. The third stamp, depicting Periodical Cicada, is part of the series Insects and Spiders, about which I wrote here. The last stamp, depicting Northern cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) and Flowering dogwood (Cornus florida), the bird and the flower of the state of North Carolina, is part of the series State Birds and Flowers, about which I wrote here.
