3413 NETHERLANDS (Netherlands / Overijssel) - Postcrossing Meetup, Deventer, 9 June 2018

Located on the river IJssel, largely on the east bank, but also to a lesser extent on the west bank, Deventer was founded in the 8th century, developing much between the years 1000-1500 due to the river trade. Since 2007 it is twinned with Sibiu, a city in Romania.

0519 NETHERLANDS (Netherlands / Overijssel) - The locomotive Magda from Museum Buurt Spoorweg

In two previous posts (here and here) I wrote about two locomotives exposed to the Museum Buurt Spoorweg (MBS), a railway museum located in Haaksbergen. The locomotive in the picture (named Locomotive Nr. 6 - De Magda) is also hosted in this museum. The locomotive was delivered in 1925 by SA des Ateliers de Construction de la Meuse (Sclessin-Liège, Belgium) to the metal factory Overpelt-Hoboken, being used as shuntingengine. In the early 80s she was acquired by mr. Jans, but he left the engine availbable for the Toeristische Trein Zolder (Tourist Train Zolder). After the closure of the tourist branch, the engine was stored in Mons, in the south of Belgium. In 1994 the MBS started the negotiations with Mr. Jans, and the engine was bought in 1995.

0468 NETHERLANDS (Netherlands / Overijssel) - Staphorst traditional clothes and the crocheted wheel protectors

Located in the province Overijssel (that means "Lands across the river Issel"), the villages Staphorst and Rouveen were founded in the 13th century, when monks started to bring the swamps into culture. All the farms were built (in the traditional Low Saxon style, with green doors and window shutters) along the long road through the bog area, forming the 10 kilometres long village of Staphorst-Rouveen, phenomenon called in Dutch lintbebouwing (ribbon urbanization).

0216 NETHERLANDS (Netherlands / Overijssel) - The locomotive NS 451 from rom Museum Buurt Spoorweg

The little Haaksbergen (24,339 inhabitants), located in the east of the Netherlands, in the province of Overijssel, very close to the German border, has something that only few cities have: a railway museum. Moreover, the Museum Buurt Spoorweg (MBS) maintains a tourist railway link with steam locomotives and other historical rail material between Haaksbergen and Boekelo. Visitors may experience the way of travelling by district trains in the past. The railway line was constructed almost 125 years ago, the station in Haaksbergen was built in 1884, and the historical steam locomotives tell the story of travelling in the early decades of the previous century.
