3107 ROMANIA (Bacău) - George Bacovia Memorial House in Bacău

George Bacovia Memorial House is the starting point for any cultural itinerary in Bacău,  a city situated in the historical region of Moldavia, at the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains, and on the Bistriţa River. George Bacovia (true name - Gheorghe Vasiliu; 17 September 1881 - 22 May 1957) is the most important Romanian symbolist poet, precursor of Romanian Modernism, and one of the most important interwar Romanian poets.

Bacovia was born in Bacău, the son of a merchant and his wife. He attended the high school classes in the hometown, then the Law School in Iaşi. He never practiced law, but had different jobs, such as copist, accountant, referent, librarian. He debuted in Alexandru Macedonski's journal Literatorul with the poem And All, signed B. George, also attending the cenacle of the same name. In volume debuted in 1916, with the suggestive symbolic title Lead.

He became clerk In Bucharest, but in 1921 he got sick of his lungs and resigned. A year later he returned to Bacau, where in 1926 he printed the volume Yellow Sparks on his own. In 1928 he married Agatha Grigorescu and settled in Bucharest. From November 1930 to October 1933, he resided in Bacău again without service, but since 1932 the Society of Romanian Writers (SSR) has approved a monthly pension. From 1933 he settled with his family in the capital, where he remained until the end of his life.

The parents of Bacovia moved in the building which is now the Memorial House in 1906, while the poet was a student in Bucharest. But, when he came home, for holidays, the young George wrote one of the most known poems dedicated to the spring, Spring Notes. The house has got six wagon style rooms, a part of princeps edition manuscripts being kept here, and also books with the poet’s works in foreign languages. Objects that belonged to to the poet and his family can also be found at the museum: furniture, paintings, pictures, volumes with autographs and a biography written by G. Bacovia himself.

The furniture in the study room is dark colored, the bed covered with Moldavian blankets and the writing table. The salon is in another room, bigger, with a street view; the piano, three big mirrors, one with silver frame, can be found here. The house courtyard has been restored in the cultural spirit of the place, therefore, here can be admired sculptures done by contemporaneous artists.
