3383 TURKEY (Central Anatolia Region) - Mevlana Museum in Konya
Located in Konya, the Mevlâna Museum is the mausoleum of Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Rumi, a Persian Sufi mystic also known as Mevlâna or Rumi. It was also the dervish lodge (tekke) of the Mevlevi order, better known as the whirling dervishes, about which I wrote here. This is one of the biggest pilgrimage centres in Turkey, and also the most visited museum, receiving 2.5 million visitors in 2017, most of them Turkish.
Sultan 'Ala' al-Din Kayqubad, the Seljuk sultan who had invited Mevlâna to Konya, offered his rose garden as a fitting place to bury Rumi's father, in 1231. When Mevlâna died in 1273 he was buried next to his father. Mevlâna's successor Hüsamettin Çelebi decided to build a mausoleum (Kubbe-i-Hadra) over the grave of his master, finished in 1274. The cylindrical drum of the dome originally rested on four pillars. The conical dome is covered with turquoise faience. In 1926 the Mevlevi order was taken out of law and the mausoleum became a museum.
Beyond the main gate (Devisan Kapısı) is a marble-paved courtyard. On the right side are located the kitchen of the dervishes (Matbah) and the Hurrem Pasha tomb, built during the reign of Süleyman the Magnificent. The kitchen was also used for educating the dervishes, teaching them the Sema. Now it containing dioramas of dervish life (one is depicted on the postcard). It is connected to the 17 dervish cells, situated on left side, where Sufi followers would have lived but now contain exhibits on dervish life.
