3293 ROMANIA (Hunedoara) - Ostrov Orthodox Church
The Whitsuntide Church from Ostrov is one of the oldest preserved wall monuments from Transylvania. The Church was built in the 14th century and is considered one of the most important medieval churches from Romania and the inside painting of byzantine style reveals many biblical scenes of great historic value. Also it preserves the most representative and best preserved medieval bell tower in the Hațeg Land: with gothic windows and massive stone corners, carved manually.
As a result of the numerous calamities suffered on it - the damage caused by the Turkish invasions of the 15-18th centuries and by the fires of 1883 and 1905 - the church has undergone numerous transformations. If the tower was added in the first half of the 15th century, the capital repair of 1863 corresponds both to the replacement of the old altar and the wall on the northern side, as well as the elevation of the other preserved walls. Other repairs were carried out in 1971 and 1996-2000.
