3438 SLOVENIA (Slovene Littoral) - Village market in Padna

The Istrian hinterland has always been very important to supply fresh and high quality food for all coastal towns. The small village Padna, located not far for Piran, and first mentioned in sources dating to 1186, has been doing this for hundreds of years. The village is surrounded by olive groves where some trees are more than 300 years old. It has been known for its large quantities of olive oil products for a long time.

In June, takes place in Padna the Olive Oil and Chard Festival during which you can taste top quality olive oils from Slovenian Istria, which are among the best in the world. The locals will also prepare a rich range of healthy agricultural products and traditional Istrian dishes made from chard.

About the stamp

The stamp is the participation of Slovenia to the 2014's issue of the EuroMed Postal Joint stamp project, The Mediterannean stamp, designed by Amany Ahmed Ali and issued on July 9, 2014. Established in March 2011 with its headquarters in Malta, the Postal Union for the Mediterranean (PUMed) forms part of the Universal Postal Union, and marks the Mediterranean region as a political, economic and social area. The EuroMed Postal Joint stamp project is a commitment which is intended to be held annually. The intention behind this idea was to keep on a similar project of the Europa Stamp, wherein a theme will be chosen and all member countries will submit their design. Each member will then be free to issue the design prepared by it. This for the exception of the first stamp issued in 2014, where all members were obliged to have the same design.
