2057 UNITED KINGDOM (Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha) - St James' Church in Jamestown, Saint Helena

Founded in 1659, Jamestown is the capital of both the island of Saint Helena and the British Overseas Territory of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha. Being the island's only port, the town is the only entrance to the island to visitors, and can be especially busy with tourists when a cruise ship stops just off the coast, mainly that its population is only 714 inhabitants.

The town has some examples of British Georgian-era colonial architecture and is proposed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Many buildings are built out of local volcanic rock. St James' Church dates from 1774 and is the oldest Anglican church in the Southern Hemisphere. The church once possessed a spire, but this had to be taken down in 1980 for safety reasons.

About the stamp
The stamp is one of the four of the series issued on October 20, 2014 to commemorate the island's participation in the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. Members of the island's team are depicted on the stamps.
