2617 CUBA (Matanzas) - Finca Campesina in Ciénaga de Zapata

Located on the Zapata Peninsula in the southern Matanzas province of Cuba, Ciénaga de Zapata (Zapata Swamp) is not only known for its size but also for being the best preserved wetlands in all of the Antilles. It features exceptional species of flora and fauna, many of which are endemic. Near the junction of the National Highway and the Road Cienaga de Zapata is Finca Campesina (Peasant Farm), a large estate that tries to recreate the rural ambience of the island.

Apart from native fishes, non-poisonous snakes, and many other species of Cuban fauna (including a crocodile farm), as well as typical specimens of flora, the estate offers recreational activities in a rural environment and the posibility to learn about the customs and culture of Cuban peasants. On the farm you can enjoy a glass of Guarapa (sugarcane juice), other natural juice or coffee (some of the best in Cuba and served with a sweet wedge of sugarcane).

A band of música campesina (peasant music) relaxes the atmosphere. The musicians uses traditional instruments, some invented in Cuba (as the tres), others with African origin,Taíno origin, or both, such as the maracas, güiro, marimba and various drums. Cuban music is very rich and is the most commonly known expression of culture. Further, Matanzas is known as the birthplace of the music and dance traditions danzón and rumba. If all of these aren't enough, a Brahma bull riding can complete the visit.
