2311 UNITED STATES (Florida) - Downtown Miami skyline
Located on the Atlantic coast, on a broad plain between the Florida Everglades to the west and Biscayne Bay to the east, which also extends from Florida Bay north to Lake Okeechobee, Miami and its metropolitan area grew from just over 1,000 residents to nearly 5.5 million residents in just 110 years (1896-2006). The city's nickname, The Magic City, comes right from this rapid growth. The historic heart of the city is Downtown Miami and is technically on the eastern side of the city.
As of 2009, there are approximately 71,000 year-round residents in Greater Downtown, with close to 200,000 populating the Downtown area during the daytime, making Downtown Miami one of the most populous downtowns in the U.S. after New York City and Chicago. It has also the third tallest skyline in the US with over 300 high-rises, 70 of which stand taller than 120m. The tallest building is the 64-story Four Seasons Hotel & Tower, which rises 240m in Miami's Brickell district and was completed in 2003.
