0389 The Capelinhos Eruption

The nine islands which composed the Archipelago of the Azores, situated in the North Atlantic Ocean, at about 1,500 km west of Lisbon, are volcanic, because from a geostructural perspective they are located above an active triple junction between three of the world's large tectonic plates (the North American Plate, the Eurasian Plate and the African Plate). The westernmost islands of the archipelago (Corvo and Flores) are located in the North American Plate, while the remaining islands are located within the boundary that divides the Eurasian and African Plates.

In the Azores there are two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Central Zone of the Town of Angra do Heroismo in the Azores (1983) and Landscape of the Pico Island Vineyard Culture (2004). About the second I wrote here, and now is the turn of the first one. Located on the island of Terceira, Angra do Heroísmo is the archipelago's oldest city and its historical capital, in nowadays being one of the three regional capitals of the Azores, together with Ponta Delgada in São Miguel and Horta in Faial.

0249 The Landscape of the Pico Island Vineyard Culture

Nine volcanic islands situated in the North Atlantic Ocean, at about 1,500km west of Lisbon, with the status of Autonomous Region of Portugal (which means that they have its own Government), these are Azores. These islands have naturally evolved into three recognizable groups: the Eastern Group (Grupo Oriental) of São Miguel, Santa Maria and Formigas Islets; the Central Group (Grupo Central) of Terceira, Graciosa, São Jorge, Pico and Faial; and the Western Group (Grupo Ocidental) of Flores and Corvo.
