About Cairo I wrote here, I will focus exclusively on the images depicted in the postcard, which I like it, because presents the all three main components that created the Egypt of today: Ancient Egypt, the Copts, and the Muslims.

0438 EGYPT - Ramesses II in a war chariot

As it seems, in the image is Ramesses II, the greatest and most powerful pharaoh of the Egyptian Empire, in a chariot, during one of the many battles he fought, mainly against the Nubians and Hittites, in the no less than 66 years of reign. The pharaoh wears on his head a Khepresh crown, also known as the blue crown or war crown, made from cloth or leather stained blue and covered with small yellow sun discs. Like many other royal crowns, it has, fastened to its front, an uraeus, i.e. the stylized, upright form of a cobra, used as a symbol of sovereignty, royalty, deity, and divine authority.

It's difficult to imagine what Howard Carter felt on November 6, 1922, when he looked through the "tiny breach [made] in the top left hand corner" of the doorway of the KV62 tomb. Much has been written in, behold, the 90 years that have passed since then, many researchers studying Tutankhamun's tomb and the artifacts found in it, but with all this enough questions remained unanswered. One of them, simple but disturbing, would be that if in the tomb of a minor pharaoh, who reigned for a short period in an Egypt weakened by the "heretical wander" of Akhenaten (formerly Amenhotep IV), were found so many wonders, what must it have been around a Ramesses II?

Egypt isn't only past but also present and future, and Cairo (Al-Qāhira, literally "The Vanquisher" or "The Conqueror") is the best example in this regard. Founded in the year 969 AD by the Fatimids near the Nile delta, Cairo is now the largest city in the Arab world and in Africa (7,009,765 inhabitants), and resides at the centre of the eleventh-largest urban area in the world (17,550,000 inhabitants).

This view of the pyramids at Giza, from the plateau to the south of the complex, is, without doubt, one of the most popular. From right to left can see the Great Pyramid of Khufu (Cheops in Greek - 2540 BC), the Pyramid of Khafre (Chefren in Greek) and the Pyramid of Menkaure (Mykerinos in Greek). The three smaller pyramids in the foreground are subsidiary structures associated with Menkaure's pyramid. The largest of them, the Pyramid of Khufu, the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still in existence, remained the tallest man-made structure in the world for over 3,800 years, unsurpassed until the 160m-tall spire of Lincoln Cathedral was completed in 1311. But not about the records of the pyramids I want to talk, nor about their meanings or about how they were built, but rather about their historical destiny and about how they were treated by the followers.
