3451 NEW ZEALAND (North Island) - Cape Egmont Lighthouse and Mount Taranaki

This lighthouse was built in London in 1864. A year later, the cast-iron segments were shipped to New Zealand and assembled on Mana Island, north of Wellington, near Cook Strait. Because it was sometimes confused with the Pencarrow Head light at the entrance to Wellington Harbour, which led to several shipping accidents, it was dismantled and moved to Cape Egmont, close to the volcanic cone of Mount Taranaki. The huge cast iron sections would have been ferried ashore by surfboats, then dragged up to the site by bullock teams.

3269 UKRAINE (Autonomous Republic of Crimea) - Tarkhankut Lighthouse

The Tarkhankut Lighthouse is located in Crimea (so to the Black Sea) at the Tarkhankut Cape 5 km southwest of the resort village of Olenivka. The construction of the this lighthouse and its twin tower on the Khersones peninsula started in 1816 to ensure safe sailing in the area. The Inkerman stone, of which the building is made, was mined near Sevastopol and transported by barges. At the end of the year, it looked like a conic 36-metre-high stone tower with a wooden 3.3-metre-high decagonal lantern. The lighthouse became operational in 1817 after its lighting system had been repaired.

2463 UNITED STATES (Michigan) - The lighthouses in Michigan

2463-1
2463-2

Posted on 16.04.2016, 06.01.2018
Michigan is the only state to consist of two peninsulas, separated from the Straits of Mackinac, a 8km channel that joins Lake Huron to Lake Michigan. The state has the longest freshwater coastline of any political subdivision in the world (almost 5,000 km), being bounded by four of the five Great Lakes, plus  Lake Saint Clair. It has also more lighthouses than any other state (about 150). The first lighthouses in Michigan were built between 1818 and 1822, to project light at night and to serve as a landmark during the day to safely guide the ships traveling the Great Lakes.

3173 UNITED STATES (Wisconsin) - North Point Light

The North Point Light is a lighthouse located in Lake Park on the East Side of Milwaukee. It replaced a previous Cream City brick lighthouse constructed in 1855 that was located too close to the edge of the eroding bluff. In 1888 a cast-iron lighthouse was built, but this tower was not tall enough and was placed on top of a steel structure in 1912 raising its height to 23m and light focal plane to 47m. The present light source is a 25,000 candlepower lamp rotated electrically, visible for 40km, and controlled by an automatic time clock.

3146 POLAND (Pomerania) - Hel Lighthouse

Situated at the eastern tip of the Hel peninsula, Hel Lighthouse guides ship traffic into Gdańsk Bay and the Bay of Puck. It has its origins in the 16th century when a fire was lit on the church tower at a height of 35m to guide ships. The structure burned down. In 1638 locals asked Gdańsk authorities to build a lighthouse on the peninsula. After deliberation, a wooden structure was erected circa 1640, with a range of about 6 miles. In 1667 it burned down, too. The construction of the first brick lighthouse (which was 41.7m high) started in 1806, but due to civil wars the effort dragged on until 1826.

Located on the coast of the Baltic Sea, in the village with the same name, between the Darłowo and the lighthouse in Ustka, Jarosławiec Lighthouse is the oldest lighthouse in Poland. Its construction began in 1835 however the lighthouse was not successful due to a number of physical factors. The lighthouse was built about 400m from the coast - this proved to be too low to be effective for navigation. Its light wasn't very visible because it was obscured by trees and it was soon decided to build a new tower closer to the beach.

Shaped like a horseshoe around a small, sheltered harbor, and named after King Gustav III of Sweden, Gustavia is the main town and capital of the island of Saint Barthélemy. The eventual site of Gustavia was first called Le Carénage after the shelter it provided to damaged ships. According to the archives the name Gustavia appeared between December 28, 1786 and February 9, 1787. Gustavia remains as a reflection of the Swedish period (1784-1878).

2722  Saint Barthélemy - Gustavia (2)

Three forts built in the mid- to late 17th century protected the harbour: Oscar (formerly Gustav Adolf), Karl and Gustav. The sites of Fort Karl, overlooking Shell Beach south of town, and Fort Gustav (built in 1787), at the base of the lighthouse to the north, are popular with hikers. Fort Oscar, at the tip of Gustavia Peninsula, houses the Gendarmerie. There is a museum at the end of Victor Schoelcher Road on the peninsula.

Since the end of WWII, the coast of Poland has stretched from Świnoujście in the west to the Gulf of Gdańsk in the east. Poland has at least 26 lighthouses on its Baltic coast and also many others on the inland waterway. All of the Polish coastline was under German control from the 18th century through the end of WWI. Poland became independent of Germany and Russia as a result of WWI, but between the two world wars its coastline was only a narrow "corridor" at Gdynia.

Posted on 16.09.2015, 31.08.2016
The Westerheversand Lighthouse is situated on the German North Sea coast in the northern part of the peninsula of Eiderstedt. Here the Hever stream has formed a channel in the intertidal area, in which the water flows to and from with the tides causing a continuously change in the depths and the extension of the sands. Many ships were stranded in this dangerous area, so in the beginning of this century it was decided to build a lighthouse at this site.

1899 A painting with a imaginary lighthouse,
inspired by Westerheversand Lighthouse

Work on the lighthouse began in 1906. Since the tower was to be built in the sands outside the diked area, a hill as protection against high floods was created. Then it was tightened by letting horses stamp the area. One hundred twenty seven wooden piles were driven into the ground as a base for the tower. The lighthouse itself is constructed of hundreds of pre-manufactured plates of cast iron. The light was finally lit for the first time in 1908.
