Named after the sugar cane (once the most important resource of the islands Saint Kitts and Nevis) and mas-short for masquerade, the Sugar Mas Carnival takes place every year between the penultimate friday of November and the last weekend of January, having the climax around Christmas. During this period, streets become a spectrum of colour as various processions and parades bring music and dancing to their every corner and the sounds of soca and calypso can be heard at every turn.

Saint Kitts Scenic Railway is an 29 km long narrow gauge railway line along the coastline of the island of Saint Kitts, with a track gauge of 762 mm, promoted especially in the colonies of the British Empire during the second half of the 19th century. The original track was laid from 1912 to 1926, to deliver sugar cane from the plantations to the new centralised sugar mill in Basseterre. Now, the last railway in the West Indies provides a fascinating way for visitors to see the island from the comfort of modern passenger train cars and sightseeing buses.

Named until 1983 Mount Misery, Mount Liamuiga is a 1,156-m stratovolcano which forms the western part of the island of Saint Kitts. The peak, topped by a 1 km wide summit crater, which contained a shallow crater lake until 1959, is the highest point on the island. The last verified eruptions from the volcano were about 1,800 years ago, while reports of possible eruptions in 1692 and 1843 are considered uncertain. The mountain sides are covered in farmland and small villages up to the 460 m height, after which lush tropical rainforests drape the slopes until cloud forest takes over at 900 m.

Located in the eastern Caribbean Sea, in the Leeward Islands, Saint Kitts and Nevis is the smallest sovereign state in the Americas, in both area and population (261 km² and 53,000 inhabitants in July 2019). The country is a Commonwealth realm, with Elizabeth II as queen and head of state. The islands were discovered through a Spanish expedition under Columbus in 1493, and was home to the first British and French colonies in the Caribbean, being titled "The Mother Colony of the West Indies."

Very different from socialite Barbados, or glitzy St Barts, 40 miles away, Nevis is a romantic island, dominated by a verdant, mist-shrouded volcano. A large number of donkeys are present on the island. They are used mainly for riding and transport, however, many are now wild. Wild donkeys roam the ruins of sugar estates, while vervet monkeys inhabit once-magnificent houses, abandoned by the British after the decline of the sugar industry in the 19th century.
