2541 CAPE VERDE - Buracona and the “blue eye”

Buracona is a small bay located in the northwest of the island of Sal, at approximately 5km north of the village Palmeira. Buracona and the "blue eye" is basically a natural pool formed by the ocean into the lava rocks. When the light hits this natural pool from the right angle, the color turns into a magic turquoise blue. The water in the cave show tides, as it is connected directly with the sea.

1955 CAPE VERDE - Everyday life of Cape Verdeans

Cape Verde is a sociedade mestiça (as described in Portuguese), which means that it is home to mixed race people. The archipelago was uninhabited when the Portuguese discovered it in 1456. African slaves were brought to work on plantations, and as a result Cape Verdeans are mulattoes (mestiços in Portuguese), who have mixed black and white origins. A genetic study revealed that the ancestry of the population is predominantly European in the male line and West African in the female line.

1583 CAPE VERDE (São Vicente) - Mindelo

Founded in 1795 by the Portuguese, Mindelo is a port city in the northern part of the island of São Vicente, one of the Barlavento islands, located between the islands of Santo Antão and Santa Luzia, with the Canal de São Vicente separating it from Santo Antão. Situated at the Porto Grande Bay, a large natural harbour, the town is surrounded by low mountains (the Monte Cara and the Morro Branco headland to the west, and the Monte Verde to the east), and is crossed by the river  Ribeira de Julião. Known for its colourful and animated carnival celebrations, with roots in Portuguese traditions and some Brazilian characteristics, it is home to 93% of the entire island's population.Its economy consists mainly of business, fishing, shipping, boating and more commonly tourism which developed more recently.

1484 CAPE VERDE - The coast at sunset

Tourism in Cape Verde, started in the 1970s on the island Sal and increased slowly in the 1980s and 1990s. The number of tourists increased from approximately 45,000 in 1997 to more than 552,144 in 2013. The vast majority of tourists visit the comparatively flat and scarcely populated islands of Boa Vista, Sal, and Maio with their white sandy beaches. The islands of Cape Verde have a pleasant climate during most of the year with 350 days of sunshine, and some of them offer an impressive mountain scenery as well. Some ecotourism is developing on the island of Fogo around the volcano Pico do Fogo. It should be noted that Cape Verde has won a positive reputation in promoting what is considered the most stable democracy in Africa, a standard of living higher than most African nations, and one of the most politically liberal nations on the continent, and in the world.

1459 CAPE VERDE (Boa Vista) - Chave Beach

Part of the Barlavento islands (literally, the Windward), the northern island group of Cape Verde archipelago, Boa Vista (Portuguese meaning "good view") is known for marine turtles and traditional music, as well as its ultramarathon and its sand dunes and beaches. With an area of 620 km², it is the third largest island, after Santo Antão and Santiago, and is located at 455km west of the coast of Africa. Much of the island is flat, the highest point being Monte Estância (387m). Boa Vista has wonderful beaches with white sand dunes, slim coconut palms and turquoise blue waters.
