2941 NETHERLANDS (Netherlands / Gelderland) - Martinus Nijhoffbrug Bridge

Located in the heart of the Netherlands, in Zaltbommel, Martinus Nijhoffbrug Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge with semi-fan system which crosses Waal River, the main distributary branch of river Rhine flowing through the country. Built between 1993 and 1996 next to Dr. W. Hupkes Bridge (1869), this road bridge has a total length of 1 000m, and its main span has 256m. It was named after Martinus Nijhoff (1894-1953), a Dutch poet and essayist. One of his best-known works is the sonnet De Moeder de Vrouw (The Mother the Woman/Wife), commemorating the opening of the now demolished bridge, the predecessor of the today one.

0655 NETHERLANDS (Netherlands / Gelderland) - Devils House in Arnhem

Located on both banks of the river Nederrijn (Lower Rhine) as well as on the stream Sint-Jansbeek, Arnhem was first mentioned in 893, received city rights in 1233 and entered the Hanseatic League in 1443. In fact it arose on the location where the road between Nijmegen and Utrecht/Zutphen split, and only when the Rhine's flow was changed in 1530 was located on the river. In the 19th century, it was a genteel resort town famous for its picturesque beauty, being known as The Little Hague of the East. To those passionate about the history of the WWII Arnhem is known due to the Operation Market Garden, about which I wrote a little here and here.

Behold that Market Garden Corridor (from Eindhoven to Arnhem) start to take shape. After the postcard with the railway bridge from Nijmegen I received it this one, with the road bridge from the same Dutch city (Thanks from the heart, Elsbeth). At the first glance (without claiming to be exhaustive) I ascertain that I would also need the images with the following objectives (of course to the extent that they exist physical nowadays and it were issued the postcards with them): 

0051 NETHERLANDS (Netherlands / Gelderland) - The Nijmegen railway bridge

Much could be said about Nijmegen, city located in the east of the Netherlands, near the German border, on the Waal river (the main distributary branch of river Rhine who connecting the Rotterdam harbor and Germany). In 2000 years of history (celebrated in 2005), Nijmegen was always in the middle of events, but only one of its is now to my attention, namely Operation Market Garden, conducted by Allied armed forces between 17 and 25 September 1944. A lot is known about this operation, at least from the excellent book A Bridge Too Far by Cornelius Ryan (1974) and from its screening of 1977, which remains a movie worthy to watch, despite the obsolete vision who exhibit only the heroic side of the war, so it's pointless to go into details.
