Saint Helena is a volcanic tropical island in the South Atlantic Ocean, part of the British Overseas Territory of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha. It is one of the most remote islands in the world and was uninhabited when discovered by the Portuguese in 1502. From 1659 it has been a British possession, apart from a short Dutch interlude in 1673, and was an important stopover for ships sailing to Europe from Asia and South Africa for centuries.

Founded in 1659, Jamestown is the capital of both the island of Saint Helena and the British Overseas Territory of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha. Being the island's only port, the town is the only entrance to the island to visitors, and can be especially busy with tourists when a cruise ship stops just off the coast, mainly that its population is only 714 inhabitants.

A volcanic peak rising from only 100km west of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, much of the island is a wasteland of lava flows and cinder cones, inhabited by 880 people.

Located in the south Atlantic Ocean, Tristan da Cunha is the most remote inhabited archipelago in the world, lying 2,000km from nearest inhabited land, Saint Helena, and 2,400km from the nearest continental land, South Africa. The territory consists of the main island, with the same name, which has a north-south length of 11.27km, along with the smaller, uninhabited Nightingale Islands and the wildlife reserves of Inaccessible and Gough Islands. Tristan da Cunha is part of the British overseas territory of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha, and has a permanent population of 266 inhabitants (all of them descendants of 15 ancestors, 8 males and 7 females, who arrived on the island at various times between 1816 and 1908).
