Frankfurt (Oder), also Frankfurt an der Oder, is a town in Brandenburg, located on the Oder River, on the German-Polish border directly opposite the town of Słubice, which was part of Frankfurt until 1945, when the Oder was designated Germany's eastern border. The Oder Bridge (in the postcard) connects the two cities. On November 4, 2017 there tooke place an international Postcrossing meetup with the theme "Bridges connecting...", the main organizer being Holger Kaufhold.

Even if the area around Potsdam was inhabited since the Bronze Age, the city became important only after it was chosen in 1660 as the hunting residence of Frederick William I, Elector of Brandenburg, the core of the state that later became the Kingdom of Prussia. After the Edict of Potsdam (1685), the city became a centre of European immigration (attracting Protestants from France, Russia, the Netherlands and Bohemia), and later a full residence of the Prussian royal family. The royal residences were built mainly during the reign of Frederick the Great.

The Trabant was one of the best known symbols of the Deutsche Demokratische Republik (German Democratic Republic) and even of the whole European communist camp. Produced by former East German auto maker VEB Sachsenring Automobilwerke Zwickau in Zwickau, Sachsen (in the factory in which Audi made the cars before the WWII), was the most common vehicle in East Germany, being also exported to countries both inside and outside the communist bloc. With its mediocre performance, inefficient two-stroke engine, noxious fumes and production shortages, the Trabant is often cited as an example of the disadvantages of centralized planning. However, in communist countries was regarded with affection, the Trabant owners forming a unique category, organized in numerous clubs.
