Chinese Singaporeans constituted 76.2% of the country's citizens, making them the largest ethnic group in Singapore. Outside Greater China, Singapore is the only country in the world where people of Chinese descent constitute a majority of the population and are well represented in all levels of Singaporean society, politically and economically. Located within the Outram district in the Central Area, Chinatown is considerably less of an enclave than it once was. However, the precinct does retain significant historical and cultural significance.

Singapore
3174 The Gate of Fort Canning

Between 1859 and 1861, a fort was build on a small hill located in the southeast portion of Singapore, to defend the harbour. It was named Fort Canning after Viscount Charles John Canning, who was then Governor-General and the first Viceroy of India. The fortifications were regarded as a failure from the beginning, as ships could easily get close enough to destroy the town and remain out of range of the fort’s guns. Moreover the lack of a water supply rendered the fort useless as a place of refuge.

In 1907, the old fort was demolished, and in 1920's a military headquarters was built with underground rooms serving as operations centre. Completed in 1938, the Battle Box comprised 30 rooms and had its own generator. By 1941, it was considered to be too small for its intended use, and a new Combined Operations Headquarters was build. The Battle Box remained the Headquarters of Major General  Frank Keith Simmons, who was responsible for the defence of Singapore Island.

Gardens by the Bay is a park found on reclaimed land in central Singapore, adjacent to the Marina Reservoir, which consists of three waterfront gardens: Bay South Garden, Bay East Garden and Bay Central Garden. It is an integral part of a strategy to transform Singapore from a "Garden City" to a "City in a Garden". The final construction cost for the project, not including the price of the land but including an access road, drainage works, and soil improvement, will be within a $1.035 billion allocated budget.

Supertrees are tree-like structures that dominate the Gardens' landscape with heights that range between 25m and 50m. Actually they are vertical gardens that perform a multitude of functions, which include planting, shading and working as environmental engines for the gardens. They are fitted with environmental technologies that mimic the ecological function of trees - photovoltaic cells that harness solar energy, just like how trees photosynthesize; and collection of rainwater, exactly like how trees absorb rainwater for growth.

Over 162,900 plants comprising more than 200 species and varieties of bromeliads, orchids, ferns and tropical flowering climbers are planted on the Supertrees. There is an elevated walkway, the OCBC Skyway, between two of the larger Supertrees for visitors to enjoy a breathtaking aerial view of the Gardens. A food and beverage outlet is planned atop the 50m Supertree. At night, the Supertrees come alive with a light and music show called the OCBC Garden Rhapsody.

2857 SINGAPORE (Central Region) - Singapore Botanic Gardens (UNESCO WHS)

Situated at the heart of the city of Singapore, the Botanic Gardens demonstrates the evolution of a British tropical colonial botanic garden that has become a modern world-class scientific institution used for both conservation and education. It was founded in 1859 by an agri-horticultural society, and played a pivotal role in the region's rubber trade boom in the early 20th century. By perfecting the technique of rubber extraction, still in use today, and promoting its economic value, rubber output expanded rapidly. At its height in the 1920s, the Malayan peninsula cornered half of the global latex production.

On the north shore of Marina Bay, in which flows Singapore River, is Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay, built to be the centre for performing arts for Singapore and completed in 2002. The unique architectural design has been said to have an appearance similar to either a durian or the eyes of a fly. Hence, the building is colloquially known to locals as "the durians". Between the Esplanade and the Singapore Flyer is spanning Marina Centre, a zone of reclaimed land which contains Suntec City, Marina Square, Millenia Walk, and Millenia Tower (218m - completed in 1996), with the roof in the form of a truncated cone.
