FRANCE - Routes of Santiago de Compostela in France (UNESCO WHS)

The Camino de Santiago (Latin: Peregrinatio Compostellana), also known by the English names Way of St. James, is any of the pilgrimage routes to the shrine of the apostle St. James the Great in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia in northwestern Spain, where tradition has it that the remains of the saint are buried, after were carried by boat from Jerusalem. It was one of the most important Christian pilgrimages during the Middle Ages, together with those to Rome and Jerusalem.

The Way can take one of dozens of pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela, but however, a few of the routes are considered main ones. To reach Spain pilgrims had to pass through France, and a group of  78 structures which marks out the main four routes was inscribed among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites as Routes of Santiago de Compostela in France. They are largely monuments, churches, or hospitals that provided services to pilgrims, but also a tower, a bridge, and a city gate. Some are places of pilgrimage in their own right.
